Landfill Tax Rise

Landfill Tax is a tax levied on the disposal of waste buried into the ground. The UK government has increased standard rate landfill tax by £8 per year since 2011 to encourage waste management companies and local authorities to find alternative waste solutions. In line with these agreed tax increases, as of the 1st of April 2013 landfill tax will rise to £72. and will rise again for at least one more year.

The EU has set the UK strict targets to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and the planned tax rise helps supports these goals. Advances in recycling technologies and energy from waste solutions all help to dramatically reduce the UK’s reliance on landfill. However the UK is still chasing the standards set by it’s European counterparts.
