Identity theft affects over 100,000 people each year in the UK costing £1.3 billion per year. After finding out a few personal details, criminals can apply for credit cards, benefits, bank accounts and personal loans. 1 in 4 people have either been affected by identity theft or know someone who has been affected. How much of this data is stored electronically on your computer?
We all know the dangers of throwing out paperwork containing personal or confidential information, which is why most of us shred this info, but what about the information held on your PC, Laptop, CD's and Backup Tapes? When we dispose of such items we need to be sure we know what happens to the data, as well as the equipment itself. Simply reformatting a hard drive isn't enough to protect your old data as you dispose of it. Ask yourself have you recently disposed of a PC, Laptop, CD, back up tape etc. with data still on it? If so please read on.
Pure Planet Recycling takes its responsibility on data security seriously on any piece of IT equipment that we handle. In compliance to the Data Protection Act, trained staff offer the following services in our secure premises.
A simple 'format' or 'delete' of data will not physically remove the data from a hard drive. As a hard drive is a magnetic storage device, a degausser will destroy any data existing on the drive and render the drive useless using a strong magnetic field. Our degausser is approved by the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance (CESG) at the lower level for UK Restricted (IL3) data destruction.
Once the hard drive degaussing has taken place. The drives are then recycled to recover the Aluminum and plastics from the drives.
Please contact us to enquire about our hard drive destruction service.
Backup tapes provide the perfect disaster recovery solution, however disposing of them without destroying the data is a disaster waiting to happen. As with hard drives, tapes are usually magnetic storage devices, so our technicians use our degausser to destroy the data on the tape.
Backup tapes once wiped are then sent for granulation and recycling.
CD's and DVD's as optical storage devices require a separate destruction system from degaussing. We simply shred the cd or dvd to ensure complete destruction of data and then to enable the recycling of the plastics. The case and even the paper in the cd case are also recycled.

Phishing is a way to illegally and deceptively acquire personal information such as usernames & passwords, credit cards and bank details by appearing as a trustworthy organisation in an electronic communication. Websites such as eBay, PayPal and online banks are regular targets. Phishing is typically carried out by email or by an instant messaging contact, and often directs users to enter details into a website; telephone contact has also been used.
Attempts to deal with the increasing number of reported phishing incidents include updates to current legislation, user training and public awareness.
The term 'Phishing' is used as a variant of the word 'Fishing' as people are reeled in to fake websites using bait such as money saving or believe it or not , website security precautions!
