Pure Planet Recycling offers a fridge freezer recycling service. We can collect and recycle both domestic and industrial fridges and freezers and ensure they are 100% recycled in accordance with the hazardous waste regulations 2005. Please contact us to book a collection.
Once collected, the equipment will be taken to a fridge freezer processing plant where all the hazardous components are removed and properly treated.
In 2002 there were European regulations bought into force that state that the insulation foam found inside a fridge has to be removed to prevent the release of chemicals known as Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).
ODS include CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), both of which, if released into the environment, destroy the ozone in the atmosphere. The ozone layer protects the Earth from the sun's harmful ultra-violet rays that cause global warming and skin cancer. CFCs and HCFCs were used in the coolant systems and insulation foam of refrigeration units up until the mid-1990s. Appliances made before this time will still contain the gases and therefore need to be disposed of properly.
To check if your fridge or freezer contains these ODS, look on the 'appliance rating plate' - a metal plate or sticky label which is found on the back of the appliance. The plate contains information about the appliance, for example the model and serial number, and in most cases will also state what refrigerant was used in the appliance. Fridges that are marked with R12 or R134a on the plate will most probably have CFC or HCFC in the insulation foam.
To find out more information regarding Ozone Depleting Substances please see the relevant government legislation.

The appliance rating plate identifies the appliance and should offer the refrigerant type used along with other details.
