Developing countries will produce twice as much WEEE

A research project has claimed that over the next six to eight years developing countries will produce twice as much Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) than more developed nations. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, forecasts that by 2030 developing countries will discard 400 million to 700 million obsolete personal computers per year compared to 200 million to 300 million in developed countries.

This rise has been attributed to a dramatic increase in ownership of PCs and other electronic devices in both developed and developing countries, while at the same time technological advances are shrinking the lifetime of electronic products.

This highlights the need for correct and safe recycling of end of life electrical equipment. Hopefully the infrastructures that been implemented within developed nations can also be adopted through investment within developing nations to counteract this issue.
