85% WEEE collection target backed by the European Parliament

This week the European Parliament has voted to back plans to increase the percentage of household WEEE collected for recycling from 65% to 85% within its member states.

Karl-Heinz Florenz, is the MEP behind the report proposing the changes in the targets of household WEEE recycled. The report initially first drafted back in february, now has amendments further detailing how the WEEE directive and the targets set should evolve to increase recycling rates. The main additional amendments to the report proposals are as follows :

  • - Reducing the amount of categories of WEEE from 10 to 6, with varying rates for recycling and recovery depending on the category.
  • - Tougher inspections to ensure only working equipment is exported for reuse.
  • - Obligating retailers to accept small WEEE items.
  • - Reusable equipment to be segregated, with a 5% reuse target for some categories of WEEE.

The new amendments, along with the original draft report from Karl-Heinz Florenz, will be voted upon in the European Parliament on September 17th, we will report the findings shortly afterwards.
