Caroline Spelman appointed Environment Secretary

Conservative MP Caroline Spelman has been named as the secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs in the first cabinet of the new coalition government. Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne has been appointed as secretary of state for energy and climate change.

Mrs Spelman is the Member of Parliament for Meriden, and most recently held the post of shadow secretary for communities and local government, as well as having previously acted as a front bench spokeswoman on environmental affairs. Mrs Spelman will now have overall responsibility on topics such as waste and recycling, but the junior minister in Defra who will be made specifically responsible for the sector is yet to be appointed.

Pure Planet Recycling wishes Mrs Spelman all the best in her new role and looks forward to seeing positive changes within the waste and recycling sector.
