Council tax set to rise unless recycling rates increase to meet targets

It seems that unless recycling rates in the UK increase we are set to see a rise in council tax rates. The Local Government Association has warned that because the UK throws more rubbish into landfills than any other EU country, we wont meet the targets set. This will mean that Local Authorities will be fined, which will ultimately be passed on to taxpayers via council tax increases.

The situation is compounded with the fact that Landfill Tax will rise each year, making it even more expensive for councils to tip waste. This highlights the need for the public to better segregate their recycling from true waste and for Local Authorities to encourage this through continued publicity and education.

Gary Porter, the Local government Association, said that with the landfill tax and fines combined, the average council bill will increase £50 per year. People have been able to throw their rubbish away for decades without worrying about the financial or environmental consequences, he continued. These day are gone, he added, and taxpayers now face big financial penalties if they don’t help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
