Government to scrap "pay as you throw" plans

The government looks set to back a recycling reward scheme in favour of the "pay as you throw" scheme, otherwise known as the bin tax.

The previous government proposed fitting electronic chips in order to monitor the weight, and charge householders that exceeded a set weight. This type of tax on bins was met with opposition because it may encourage the illegal fly tipping of waste.

The recycle reward schemes works on the principle of the electronic chip being fitted to the recycling bin, to record the amount of recycling waste disposed of from your household, with rewards then being given in the form of vouchers for retailers. Trials in certain areas of England have seen better than expected results, so this has been chosen as the preferred option in reducing landfill and increasing the recycling rates of householders.

Pure Planet Recycling agrees that the recycling reward schemes are the best option for encouraging recycling within the home, and looks forward to seeing them implemented nationwide.
