Battery recycling collections on the increase in the UK

This week the Environment Agency have released figures to show that portable battery recycling collections are on the increase in the UK. The first quarter of this year showed the rate of 9.15%, with the second quarter at 16.5%. This means the average for the first half of the year is 12.58% which shows we are steadily increasing to the 25% target set by the European Union's Batteries Directive for the collection of portable batteries.

It seems that the increase of portable battery collection bins in supermarkets, trade outlets and civil amenity sites are beginning to hit home. Householders and businesses are increasingly being made aware of the directive, similar to that of the introduction of the WEEE directive. Portable batteries should be segregated from general waste and recycled with an authorised waste management company in order for them to be treated in the correct manner.

We look forward to reporting on the continued increase of battery collections in the UK and encourages the segregation of such waste for proper treatment.
